Overview

Waktoo is a screen time monitoring mobile application that allows users to manage their daily social media usage. The application includes several features that encourage users to manage the time spent on social media consistently. The application was created for users who spend an unhealthy amount of their time on social media.

This project aims to raise awareness of the impact of social media addiction and decrease users’ usage of social media applications.

01

Problem

User addiction, as identified by Zhang et al. (2019), represents a significant societal challenge, particularly in the context of short-form video platforms, with detrimental effects on individuals' productivity, well-being, and health, as noted by Andreassen and Pallesen (2014). Furthermore, research indicates that TikTok addiction contributes to procrastination, with users increasingly viewing short-form videos as a means of delaying tasks over time, as highlighted by Hernandez et al. (2019).

02

Research

I conducted a survey to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs.

  • A primary user group identified through survey was TikTok users.

  • Young adults between 18 and 24 will be best represented in this study

  • The respondents are primarily from Malaysia and Indonesia. This study targets males and females; most are university students.

Quantitative data was gathered through an online survey method. The research survey was conducted online to reach a broader target of respondents so that it is expected to represent the population of TikTok application users.

User Persona

The first persona created was named Olivia. She is a university student. She likes taking photos and making videos. Her work and learning are interrupted by the use of TikTok.

User Journey

The journey map shows Olivia's emotional experiences, thoughts, and feelings throughout the journey as she uses TikTok. She has succeeded in reducing her screen time on Tiktok.

Solution

  • Develop a mobile application focused on screen time management and productivity improvement.

  • Design features that allow users to set time limits for various apps, track their screen time usage, and receive notifications or reminders when approaching or exceeding their designated limits.

  • Implement features to help users establish healthy digital habits, such as scheduling screen-free time, setting goals for productive activities, and accessing resources for managing distractions.

  • Add gamification into the app by incorporating a series of minor tasks that contribute to the user's overall progress. Once a predetermined number of tasks are successfully completed, users will be rewarded with achievement coins.

Design

My design concept involves using rounded shapes based on triangles, squares, and circles. All graphic elements and illustrations have been designed with a rounded aesthetic. For typography, I opted for the Poppins font due to its legibility and compatibility with my app's design. This font is primarily employed for body text sections. To introduce variety, I incorporated another font called Ubuntu, primarily reserved for headings. These two fonts align well with the design concept. The graphic elements in this project consist of triangles, squares, and circles, which have all been given rounded edges. The color palettes used in this project include blue, orange, green, purple, white, and black. These colors symbolize enhanced productivity, a key aspect of my app, which focuses on managing time constraints and boosting efficiency.

Take a look at you daily and weekly statistic.

This page will show users their daily and weekly statistics. Users can track their screen time, the number of times they open specific apps, and how long they spend on each app. Users can also select their mood for the day which can later be observed in the long run.

Goals Page are a set of exercises for users to complete. Once the user has completed a goal, they will be closer to achieving their end goal. Each goal will have a different type of exercise. All goals will complement the initial end goal that the user has chosen

You can get the most up-to-date article every week!

The feed section in the app would feature updated articles and information related to social media addiction. Users will be able to read these articles to gain a better understanding of how harmful excess mobile phone usage is to their well-being.

Achievements: A set of minor tasks accumulating towards the user’s overall progress. After a certain amount of tasks are completed, the user will receive an achievement reward in the form of coins. The more tasks completed, the higher the reward will be. Each task will have levels. The higher the level, the more challenging the task will be.

Recommendation

Waktoo can be further improved by working closely with other mobile applications that can help track a user’s day to day activities. For instance, there are currently many devices that people can choose from that helps them track their sleep to ensure that they are not only receiving the correct amount of sleep but also the right amount of sleep quality. By doing so, waktoo can provide more goals for people to strive for other than those on the app or their phones, with the aim of creating a more significant relationship with the real world rather than being continuously stuck on their phones. Furthermore, Waktoo can also improve the scale of who they want to help. For instance, the app could be more flexible, meaning people with different priorities has different goals to complete. Therefore, their work or other important matters will not interfere with their wanting to reduce the usage of their phones or social media.
